Young Like You

Dear Eugene,

I got into an argument again with my son last night and wrote this:

I dive into a different layer
Swim with no sound
To not disturb you--No, not again, I say
   Never again
If
I
Can
I
Ever again
Swim in a wavelength of       freedom           guilelessness
grace            solitude                  and all the clichés of once being young
Like you?

Yours, Alex

  1. Dear Eugene,

I saw my daughter sick again last night and wrote this:

    Into the waves, sunlight crashed,
    its confetti of brilliance falling
on your face in the foam
    for the first wash.

    Your toes interlaced
    with ocean fingers against
    the drag of shell-studded sand
caressing your virgin skin for the first time.

Into the waves, I called out your name
from the distance of a breath.
Never again if I can or can I
    ever again lose this vision

Of your first dive in love.

    Yours, Kate
